Here's a little about us;
Let's not measure a breeder's success by the amount of winning their dogs do in a performance or show ring but by the number of dogs that stay with the family that purchased them as a pup and that die in the arms of that same family 14 years later. In that case...we have 3 winners. The winners are breeder, the family and most importantly...the dog.
Sotto German Shepherds is a small hobby kennel located east of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. We're near Cooks Creek, MB I enjoy training, working and just spending time with my dogs. Our property is 160 acres along a creek with plenty of room to run, swim and play.
I've had German Shepherds since my childhood and have loved the breed ever since! The German Shepherd suits our lifestyle the best. Our family is very active with our horses and other outdoor activities. The more training, working and socializing that you do with your German Shepherd, the closer the bond and more confident, well-mannered and calm your German Shepherd will be. You will have a wonderful obedient companion.
Family raised German Shepherd dogs are not ones left in a crate nor locked/chained in the back yard and forgotten. They need mental stimulation to be mentally healthy.
Our German Shepherds live in house with us and are valued as family members. Living in our house with us is cool for them in the summer months and warm in the winter months but most important is the companionship and bond that is developed.
"If" breeding, my goal is to produce quality WORKING LINE (Czech lines) German Shepherds that will be healthy, strong, loyal companions with solid working drives and be protective friends. They will be mentally healthy, physically sound. They will have a strong and not over angled hind end. They will be intelligent with lots of character, high drives, personality and heart. They are instinctively protective WITHOUT being aggressive.
Before being considered for breeding, our suitable adults are selected by their health and healthy background, sound and easy going temperament, the quality of their bloodlines, and their ability and drives to work. Our German Shepherds will also have numerous CKC working titles before being considered worthy of breeding.
Breeding is never my first option for our dogs. Training and competing is my passion. This will prove to me that they have the brains and working drives worthy to pass on.
My German Shepherds are X-rayed (OFA) hips and elbows or certified in Europe prior to coming to Canada. They are also DM tested before they are considered for breeding. My German Shepherds are on Heartworm Preventative and given limited vaccinations.
We feed dehydrated raw (Smack) and quality kibble. They also get frozen raw chicken carcasses 3 times a week and frozen sardines every other day.
All of our pups are whelped in our sunroom, in our house under my constant watch... helping if needed and just watching over them! They stay in our sunroom until ready to leave with their families. They go outside in the daytime and back inside for the night time. I bottle feed all our babies to help mom but mostly for the contact with them. Friends also come over to help feeding which socializes them all from birth.
They will be socialized and exposed to different noises, objects and surfaces. Starting at about 6 weeks old we start short walks and get longer as they get older.
I register our German Shepherd pups on a Non-breeding contract. Breeding rights "could" be available but only to select people who will be providing a working home, completing all health testing and titling to show worthy of reproducing.
They will be micro chipped for ID and will have be vaccinated appropriately for their age and ready to join their new families at eight weeks old unless previously arranged. They will be wormed numerous times.
We have a return policy which requires that our puppies be returned to us if circumstances change and you are unable to keep the puppy/dog for any reason.
Any training MUST be done with respect and not abusive. NO shock collars or pinch collars unless experienced. If you are experienced...you won't need to use harsh tools.
I insist that new puppy owners enroll in at least one Puppy Obedience Class (6 week) session and hope for a few Adult Obedience Classes. Socializing and manners are very important. Obedience...is the key to your pup growing into a enjoyable companion.
I produce solid black German Shepherds and also Black/Tan German Shepherds.
Because I am always improving our bloodlines we often have adults available to re-home or co-own. If re-homed then they will be spayed or neutered.
